Which Cards Qualify
Six Citi cards qualify, and the S$61 is the same on every one. The Citi SMRT is the one I would look at first: its sign-up reward is S$30 higher than the rest on the Grab voucher and the cash, and it is the card I use most for electronics and home furnishings.
Citi SMRT — 5% cashback on groceries, online shopping, taxis and rides, and on bus and MRT fares paid by SimplyGo, if you spend S$500 a month. There is no monthly cap, only an annual one, which fills at about S$12,000 of spend a year.
Citi PremierMiles — 1.2 miles per dollar (mpd) locally, 2.2 mpd on foreign currency. Two complimentary lounge visits a year, and the miles don’t expire.
Citi Rewards — 4 mpd on online shopping and on fashion and department stores in person, capped at S$1,000 of eligible spend a month. No minimum spend, but mobile-wallet and travel transactions do not count.
Citi Cash Back — 8% cashback on petrol and private commute, 6% on dining and groceries, with a S$800 minimum spend.
Citi Cash Back+ — a flat 1.6% unlimited cashback on every spend. No categories, no minimums.
Citi M1 — 3% back on your M1 bills, on the first S$300 of M1 charges each month. No minimum spend. Everything else earns 0.3%.
What the S$61 Sits On Top Of
The sign-up reward runs from 3 to 31 August with a qualifying spend requirement of S$500. You choose one gift on the redemption form, and the Citi SMRT Card is on a better list than the rest.
Citi SMRT Card
- Dyson Airstrait straightener (S$799)
- Dyson V8 Cyclone vacuum (S$559)
- 25,000 Max Miles by HeyMax
- S$470 in Grab vouchers
- S$430 cash by PayNow
Citi PremierMiles, Rewards, Cash Back, Cash Back+ and M1
- Dyson Airstrait straightener (S$799)
- Dyson V8 Cyclone vacuum (S$559)
- 25,000 Max Miles by HeyMax
- S$440 in Grab vouchers
- S$400 cash by PayNow
The three gifts are the same on both lists. Only the Grab vouchers and the cash are higher on the SMRT, by S$30.
The campaign values 25,000 Max Miles at S$600, but HeyMax redeems Max Miles against any flight at 1.8 cents each through FlyAnywhere, which puts 25,000 at about S$450.
Who Can Apply
You need to be a resident of Singapore, and new to Citi credit cards. New to Citi means all three:
- you hold no Citi credit card at the point your application is approved
- no Citi credit card you held as the main cardholder has been closed in the 12 months before, whether you closed it or Citibank did
- you have no other Citi card application already pending
An approved card you never activated still counts as one you hold.
What Counts Toward the S$500
Retail purchases, in store and online. These do not count:
- Instalment plans: Equal Payment Plan, Citi PayLite, Citi Flexibill and other instalment loans
- Cash advances, Quick Cash, quasi-cash and balance transfers
- Annual fees, interest, late payment fees, other service fees and GST
- Bill payments made with the card as the source of funds
- Citi PayAll payments where you are not charged the PayAll service fee
- Refunded, disputed or unauthorised transactions
You can refer to the T&Cs here.
When You'll Get Paid
You need a PayNow account, and the mobile number you put on the redemption form is the one the cash goes to. It cannot be changed afterwards, and rewards are not re-issued if the number is wrong.
The cash is the fastest of the rewards to arrive, at about four weeks after you meet the spend, if you did every step above on time. Otherwise the confirmation email comes within three calendar months of you completing every condition.
Keep the card for 12 months from approval. Cancel it earlier and the reward can be clawed back.
Conclusion
If a Citi card was already on your list, set an alarm for 1PM or 6PM. Pick the card that you will use most regularly.
💳 Credit cards change their T&Cs every so often and it’s difficult to stay updated. That’s why I created a Telegram Broadcast where you can receive timely bite-sized updates.
