KrisFlyer miles are the reward miles you earn through Singapore Airlines’ loyalty programme. For Basic, Elite Silver and Elite Gold members, their standard expiry is at the end of the month three years after you earn them.
Your travel plans may have changed, or the flight you want may have no award seats before your miles expire. An extension buys more time to book; meals, groceries, shopping and hotel stays give you other ways to use the miles.
Let’s talk about paying for extension first.
Should You Pay For Extension?
Booking Before Your Flight Up To 355 Days Before Departure Instead Of Paying For Extension
Singapore Airlines accepts online bookings up to 355 days before departure.
If you can book a flight with miles now, you do not need to extend your miles just because the trip is after their expiry date. The ticket must be issued before the miles expire, for travel within its validity, generally 12 months from issue unless specified otherwise. A waitlisted flight must be confirmed and ticketed before your miles expire.
For example, miles expiring on 31 October 2026 can pay for a ticket issued on 20 October 2026 for travel in September 2027. But if you cancel that award in November 2026, those expired miles will not be returned.
An Extension Is Worth Considering When You Have a Flight in Mind
If you cannot book before expiry, the extension fee needs to leave you with a bigger saving than using the miles now.
- Fee: US$12 or 1,200 miles for every 10,000 miles or part thereof. US$12 was about S$15.38 at the indicative 15 October 2026 exchange rate. Even if you are only extending only 2,000 miles, the fee will still cost US$12 or 1,200 miles.
- Extra time: Six months for Basic members; 12 months for Elite Silver and Elite Gold members.
- Limit: One extension before expiry, for miles approaching their first expiry. Already expired or previously extended miles cannot be extended again.
In our 2,000-mile example, using the miles for S$20 off a planned Kris+ purchase is a better choice than paying to keep them with no flight in mind.
Should you pay cash or miles for the extension fee?
The cheaper payment depends on how much you value your miles. Using the illustrative US$12 = S$15.38 cash fee:
- At 1 cent per mile: 1,200 miles are worth S$12, so paying with miles is cheaper.
- At 1.5 cents per mile: 1,200 miles are worth S$18, so paying cash is cheaper.
Personally, I would not pay for extension but opt to use up the miles through the methods below.
Overall Options To Use Your Expiring Miles
These options give you different savings for the same miles. We are looking at value per KrisFlyer mile to evaluate how much money each mile helps you save on a purchase. If you use 1,000 miles to reduce a bill by S$10, each mile saves you 1 cent. If those same miles only reduce the bill by S$5, each mile saves you 0.5 cents. The higher the value, the more money the same miles save you.
“Minimum miles” is the smallest transfer or miles payment allowed.
| Option | Value per mile | Minimum miles | When it suits you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kris+: Meals and local purchases | 1 cent | 1 to transfer; 10 for merchant payments | You can use just the expiring miles and pay the rest by card through Apple Pay or Google Pay at an outlet that accepts miles; merchant discounts or discounted vouchers may offer additional savings. |
| KrisShop: Online shopping | 1 cent | 1,000 direct; 10 via Kris+ | KrisShop suits an item you already want when its final price, including tax and delivery, matches or beats the same item elsewhere. You can pay partly with miles. |
| Pelago.com: Tours and attractions | 1 cent | 1,000 direct; partial payment via Kris+ | Direct Pelago.com requires full miles payment; Pelago through Kris+ allows miles plus card. It suits an activity you already want, at a comparable total price. |
| yuu: Discounted rewards | Varies; standard spending gives 0.75 cents | 1,600 to transfer | You already want the voucher or food reward, and it saves more than 1 cent per KrisFlyer mile |
Kris+: Spend Your Expiring Miles On Merchants You Already Buy From
If you have no flight in mind, Kris+ lets you spend the miles at merchants you already buy from, with more time to use them. Your miles can be transferred before expiry to become KrisPay miles in the Kris+ app’s wallet. These are valid until the end of the sixth month after the transfer month so an October 2026 transfer expires on 30 April 2027. There is no SIA mileage-extension fee, but the transfer cannot be reversed.
For a balance of 10–999 expiring miles, Kris+ is a good way to spend without reaching the direct KrisShop or Pelago.com minimum miles spend requirement of 1,000 miles. This includes eligible KrisShop and Pelago purchases made inside Kris+, subject to the in-app payment terms.
Merchant vouchers are another way to use miles in Kris+. For example, if a S$50 voucher costs S$40 or 4,000 miles, the voucher itself gives you a S$10 discount. Paying with 4,000 miles then replaces the S$40 cash payment, so each mile covers 1 cent of the voucher price and buys 1.25 cents of voucher credit.

KrisShop: 1 Cent per Mile, Less if the Item Costs More Than Elsewhere
You can also use your expiring miles for KrisShop purchases, directly or through Kris+. Both give 1 cent per mile, but Kris+ lets you redeem from 10 miles, compared with 1,000 miles on KrisShop.com. Both let you pay the rest by card.
Kris+ is useful for clearing fewer than 1,000 expiring miles. It does not earn you new miles on the amount paid with miles — only eligible card spending earns miles. Direct KrisShop can be better if its promotions or KrisShopper benefits give you a better deal.
You can just use the slider at the checkout page to use up the expiring miles. An inflated KrisShop price reduces the actual value you get from your miles. For Apple products, the comparison is the same model, storage and warranty against Apple’s price and any retailer discounts.
What I Did With My Expiring Miles
I bought an item on KrisShop on 5 August 2026, because it was on a discount against other retail outlets and some of the miles in my mom’s account was expiring.
- Item price before GST: S$109.90.
- S$10 voucher: reduced the price to S$99.90.
- GST: S$8.99; delivery: free.
- Total: S$108.89.
- Payment: 10,706 KrisFlyer miles offset S$107.06, leaving S$1.83 to pay by card.
This allowed me to use up all the orphan miles, and the account is now left with 69,000 miles which could cover a two way economy flight to Japan, depending on the miles required and award-seat availability.
Pelago.com: Activities Paid Entirely With Miles
Pelago.com accepts KrisFlyer miles for attractions, tours and activities, including eligible ground transport, eSIMs and spa experiences where listed. Every 100 miles offsets S$1, or 1 cent per mile, with a 1,000-mile minimum.
For example, if only 3,000 miles expire this month but an activity needs 10,000 miles (S$100), direct Pelago.com payment also uses 7,000 miles from the rest of your balance. However, you can actually use Pelago through Kris+ to get around this. Kris+ allows KrisPay miles plus card payment, so an eligible in-app booking lets you enter the amount of Krispay miles you want to use for the activity.
You should note that the same activity may cost less on Klook. For the earlier 10,000-mile example, a Klook price of S$80 after discounts means those miles save you S$80—0.8 cents each, rather than S$100.
Discounted yuu Rewards Can Beat 1 Cent per Mile
yuu’s standard checkout rate gives only 0.75 cents per KrisFlyer mile, below Kris+’s 1 cent. Discounted rewards can make yuu worth considering: my screenshot below shows selected vouchers and food rewards at 50% off their usual points price. I covered this in a video to show how these rewards can stretch an expiring miles balance further.
At the 1:1.5 conversion rate, the S$2 Anywheel cash voucher for 200 yuu Points, reduced from 400, shown above gives 1.5 cents per KrisFlyer mile. This rate applies to that voucher, not necessarily your whole transfer.
The yuu app shows 1 KrisFlyer mile converting to 1.5 yuu Points.
The minimum transfer of 1,600 miles gives you 2,400 yuu Points. After redeeming this voucher, you still have 2,200 points left. The transfer is worth considering if there are enough discounted rewards you are able to redeem and use.
The transfer is to your own linked yuu account and cannot be reversed. The annual cap is 80,000 KrisFlyer miles.

Other Options if You Cannot Use the Choices Above
A lower rate can still be useful for planned fuel or grocery spending if you cannot use the higher-value options before expiry. However, a minimum transfer that requires extra, unexpired miles may defeat the purpose.
| Option | Value per KrisFlyer mile | Minimum miles and what you receive | Main restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shangri-La Circle | About 0.71 cents | 20,000 → about 1,666 Circle Points | Participating hotel, dining or spa redemption; exchange rate affects value |
| CapitaStar | 0.70 cents at the usual voucher rate | 5,000 → 35,000 STAR$ → S$35 | Participating eCapitaVoucher stores; reward denominations matter |
| Esso Smiles | 0.67 cents for the S$30 fuel reward | 3,000 → 500 Smiles; 750 Smiles needed for S$30 | From zero Smiles, that S$30 reward needs 4,500 KrisFlyer miles |
| KrisFlyer Cruise | About 0.64 cents | 1,000 minimum; 200 miles → US$1 | Fare only; taxes, port fees and other excluded charges remain payable |
| Accor ALL hotel bills | About 0.64 cents | 4,500 → 1,000 Reward points → €20 | Participating hotels and eligible rates; regional redemption minimums differ |
| Linkpoints | 0.60 cents | 3,000 → 1,800 Linkpoints → S$18 | Participating stores; points have their own expiry |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Varies by hotel | 3,000 → 2,250 Bonvoy points | Award availability; conversion can take up to eight weeks |
| Velocity | Varies by redemption | 5,000 minimum; 1.55 miles → 1 Velocity Point | Membership is restricted to residents of Australia, New Zealand and eligible Pacific islands |
Conclusion
An extension makes sense if you can use the miles within the extra time and the saving, after the fee, exceeds what you could save by using those miles now. If your travel plans have changed, using them for an everyday purchase can be a sensible decision.
Kris+ is a useful first check if you have no flight in mind: a merchant you already use lets you clear just the expiring miles, with merchant discounts and discounted vouchers offering additional savings. Discounted yuu rewards can give more than 1 cent per mile, provided you will redeem the 50% redemption deals.
KrisShop suits an item you already want when its delivered price matches or beats the same item elsewhere. Pelago suits a planned activity at a comparable price. Direct Pelago.com requires miles for the whole booking; Kris+ lets you pay partly with miles.
The best choice saves you money on something you already need. A higher value per mile is useful only if you will use the reward.
