Maybank World Mastercard Review | What You Need To Know

Maybank World Mastercard Overview:

The Maybank World Mastercard is a premium miles card built for a very specific type of spender — someone who spends heavily in foreign currency, pumps petrol regularly, and possibly plays golf.

It’s not your everyday spend card. The local earn rate is a measly 0.4 miles per dollar, which is basically nothing. But where this card shines is in its uncapped foreign currency earn rate (up to 3.2 miles per dollar) and the fact that it comes with complimentary Rewards Infinite membership — meaning your TREATS Points never expire.

Rewards Infinite Membership:

This is a big deal that most people overlook. When you hold the Maybank World Mastercard, you automatically get enrolled into Maybank’s Rewards Infinite (RI) programme — for free, with no spending requirement. For comparison, other Maybank cardholders would need to spend at least S$24,000 in a membership year to qualify for RI.

What does RI membership give you?

  • Your TREATS Points will never expire, as long as you maintain the RI membership
  • The non-expiry benefit extends to TREATS Points earned across all your Maybank TREATS Points cards (e.g. the Visa Infinite or Horizon Visa Signature)
  • If you hold multiple Maybank miles cards, all your points are protected from expiry

One thing to note: there’s a cap of 5,000,000 TREATS Points in your account. Anything earned above this gets forfeited automatically. For most people, this won’t be an issue — 5 million TP is a lot of points. But if you’re a very heavy spender, keep an eye on your balance and convert before you hit the ceiling.

Best for High-Value Foreign Currency Spending With No Cap:
  • If you make large overseas purchases (like luxury items), this card is an excellent choice. You’ll earn 3.2 miles per dollar on all foreign currency spending with no spending limit. This is especially beneficial if you spend over S$4,000 in a calendar month, charged in foreign currency.
  • Bonus: While it is not the best for miles on everyday local purchases, this card is one of the rare card that offer some rewards for charitable donations, education, hospital, and utility bills (0.4 mpd for local spend). But if you spend on those items overseas (e.g. overseas hospital bills), you can earn 3.2 miles per dollar on those payments, charged in foreign currency.
  • However, there is a foreign currency fee of 3.25% that applies to all foreign currency transactions

Therefore, here is the cost per mile for each tier (taking into account the fx fee):

This card is worth it if you:
  • Spend heavily in foreign currency (at least S$800/month, ideally S$4,000+)
  • Pump petrol regularly and want to stack fuel card discounts with miles earning
  • Play golf and want complimentary green fees
  • Already hold (or plan to hold) multiple Maybank miles cards and want to pool non-expiring TREATS Points

This card is NOT worth it if you:
  • Primarily spend locally — 0.4 mpd is terrible for local spend
  • Spend less than S$800/month in foreign currency — you won’t hit the tier that makes this card worthwhile
  • Don’t want to deal with the S$27.25 conversion fee every time you redeem miles
  • Are looking for a simple, all-rounder miles card
When are TREATS Points credited?
TREATS Points are credited monthly to your account.

Do my TREATS Points expire?
No. As a World Mastercard holder, you’re automatically enrolled in the Rewards Infinite programme, which means your TREATS Points never expire. This benefit extends to TREATS Points earned on your other Maybank TREATS Points cards too.

Can I pool TREATS Points across my Maybank cards?
Yes, TREATS Points are pooled across all your Maybank TREATS Points cards automatically.

Is the foreign currency earn rate really uncapped?
Yes. There’s no spending cap on the foreign currency tiers. As long as you hit the monthly threshold, every dollar earns at the stated rate.

How do I get the petrol discount?
Apply for a Caltex Diamond Sky Fuel Card or Shell Corporate Fuel Card separately and link it to your Maybank World Mastercard. The fuel cards are free.

What’s the annual fee and can it be waived?
The annual fee is S$261.60, waived for the first year. Officially, you need to spend S$24,000 in a membership year for a fee waiver, but you can also try calling Maybank to request a waiver.

Can I pair this card with Amaze card to save on foreign currency fee?
You can, but it will not be worthwhile. As Amaze converts the transaction from foreign currency to SGD, the transaction will be recognised as a local transaction, thereby giving you 0.4 miles per dollar, instead of 3.2 miles per dollar.
Final Thoughts:

The Maybank World Mastercard is a specialist card. It does a few things very well — foreign currency, petrol, golf — but it’s not trying to be your one-and-only card. Pair it with a strong local spend card and it becomes a powerful part of your miles-earning strategy.

💳 Credit cards change their T&Cs every so often and it is difficult to stay updated. That’s why I created a Telegram Broadcast where you can receive timely bite-sized updates to get the most out of your spending.

💡 We believe in always paying our credit card bills on time and in full. It is only by doing that, can we fully maximise our credit card benefits.
