Step-by-Step Guide to Opening a Wise Account in Singapore

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is a popular way to hold, send, and receive money across more than 40 currencies at the mid-market exchange rate (the rate you see on Google, with no markup added). For anyone in Singapore who pays overseas invoices, sends money abroad, or spends while travelling, it is a practical alternative to the markups and fees that traditional banks tend to charge.

Opening a Wise account is free, with no minimum balance and no monthly maintenance fees. Here is how to set one up.

Who Can Open an Account

To open a personal account, you need to meet a few basic requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have an acceptable ID document, or a Singpass account
  • Have a Singapore address with proof of residency (i.e. resident of Singapore)

If you’re not based in Singapore, you can likely still open a Wise account from your home country. Wise operates in most parts of the world — just visit the Wise website for your country to check.

What You'll Need

Have these ready before you start:

  • Proof of identity: Passport or NRIC
  • Proof of address: Singapore driving licence, bank statement, utility bill, or a letter from a government agency such as IRAS

Singapore citizens and permanent residents (PRs) can skip the document uploads entirely by verifying with Singpass.

Personal Or Business Account

One thing worth knowing about Wise accounts in Singapore: there are limits on how much you can hold or send, which exist to keep accounts secure and comply with MAS rules. You can’t hold more than the equivalent of 5,000 SGD in a Wise personal account at the end of any business day, and you can’t send or spend more than 30,000 SGD (or equivalent) over any 12-month period. These limits don’t apply to Wise business accounts, or to balances held in Wise Interest or Stocks.

A Note on Fees

It is free to open a Wise account, with no minimum balance or maintenance charges. Wise is transparent about its conversion fee, and the exact amount is always shown upfront before you confirm a transfer.

Final Thoughts

Wise is a straightforward way to manage money across currencies without the heavy markups banks often apply. Setting up an account takes only a few minutes, especially if you verify with Singpass.

As always, do check Wise’s latest terms and fees before transacting, as these can change over time.

💳 Money apps and banks change their terms every so often and it can be difficult to stay updated. That is why I created a Telegram Broadcast where you can receive timely bite-sized updates.
