From today, 4 August 2026, the UOB Absolute Cashback Card pays an extra 0.3% cashback on anything you tap your physical card to pay for — taking most contactless spend to a flat 2%, with no cap and no minimum, until 31 January 2027. Then on 4 September, a separate change will cut the cashback on a short list of overseas categories to 0.3%. I’ve talked about the UOB Absolute as one of the easy unlimited cashback cards for a while — 1.7% on almost everything, no minimum spend, no cap.
Here’s everything about the changes and the best use case for this, based on my analysis.
The Contactless Boost: Up to 2% Until 31 January 2027
For six months, from 4 August 2026 to 31 January 2027, UOB is adding 0.3% cashback on top of the card’s usual rate whenever you pay by contactless. On the 1.7% base, that’s 2% cashback when you use the physical card to tap at payment terminals.
What you need to know:
- No cap and no minimum spend. The bonus 0.3% has no monthly limit, same as the base rate. You don’t have to hit any spend target to unlock it.
- It only counts when you tap the physical card. The bonus is earned when you tap your actual card on the payment machine — in Singapore dollars or a foreign currency. Paying online doesn’t count, and neither does tapping your phone (Apple Pay or Google Pay).
- The extra 0.3% is paid separately. Whatever bonus you earn in a month is credited to your card account the following month.
So on most spending, a single tap of your physical card earns 2% during the campaign — the card’s usual 1.7% plus the 0.3% bonus. On a S$100 physical card tap, that’s S$2 back.
The Most Useful Part: Earning on Commonly-Excluded Categories
The most useful part of the bonus is earning extra cashback on the categories most cards leave out. On this card, these already sit at just 0.3%:
- Charity
- Education
- Government
- Healthcare
- Utilities
- Other professional services
- Grab mobile wallet top-ups
Where you can pay by tapping the physical card — a hospital bill or a government payment at a kiosk, for example — that 0.3% plus the 0.3% bonus works out to 0.6% during the campaign. But the bonus only counts on a physical card tap. A Grab top-up, for instance, is done online in the app rather than tapped at a terminal, so it stays at 0.3% and doesn’t get the extra 0.3%.
The Overseas Nerf: Selected Categories Drop to 0.3% From 4 September 2026
From 4 September 2026, when you pay these same categories overseas — charity, education, government, healthcare, utilities, other professional services, or a Grab top-up while travelling — you’ll earn 0.3% instead of 1.7%.
This isn’t new for local spend. UOB already cut these same categories to 0.3% for local transactions back on 6 May 2024, and local Grab top-ups have been at 0.3% since 15 January 2023. Until now, the overseas versions still earned the full 1.7%. From 4 September, overseas is treated the same.
Before you start worrying, even at 1.7%, this was never a good card for overseas spend. UOB charges a foreign-currency fee of around 3.25% on anything you pay in a foreign currency. Either way the 3.25% foreign exchange fee is larger than the 1.7% cashback, so an overseas payment in these categories was already a net loss. So I wouldn’t be too concerned about this nerf.
What's Changing and When
| Change | Effective | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| +0.3% contactless bonus | 4 Aug 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | Physical card contactless taps earn up to 2% (1.7% base + 0.3%). No cap, no minimum. Excludes online or mobile contactless. |
| Overseas selected categories cut to 0.3% | From 4 Sep 2026 | Overseas selected categories drop from 1.7% to 0.3%. Local rates for these were already 0.3%. |
My Take
For the next six months, if AMEX is accepted where you’re paying, the UOB Absolute Card is one of the simplest ways to earn 0.6% on local charity, education, government, healthcare, utilities and other professional services — the usual 0.3% plus the 0.3% bonus — when you tap the physical card at payment terminals. Anything not on the exclusion list that you pay online or by mobile contactless won’t get the bonus cashback. That makes it strong for payments most credit cards exclude.
If you would like to apply for this card for specific use cases that I’ve mentioned above, the UOB Absolute is one of the cards in the current UOB sign-up flash deal with an upsized sign up offer of S$400 or a Dyson Airstrait at 2pm for the month of Aug for the three fastest applicants each day, on a S$500 minimum spend, for new to UOB cardholders.
An alternative to this card if you are thinking of using it for everyday spend is the DCS Ultimate Platinum, which already gives 2% cashback on almost everything permanently and it is a Mastercard which is more widely accepted by merchants. DCS Ultimate Platinum will, however, not earn you any cashback on the commonly excluded categories that I’ve mentioned above. The drawback on the DCS Ultimate Platinum is that after the first year, the annual fee is broken up into a monthly card fee, which is more to keep track of — you have to waive it every month by making at least 8 transactions or spending S$800 on the card — I wrote about what changed and how to keep it at zero here.
- You qualify if: you have no UOB credit card right now, AND haven't cancelled any UOB credit card in the last 12 months
- Spend min. S$500 within the first 30 days from card approval
- SingSaver will email you a Rewards Redemption Form — check inbox (and spam folder) after applying. Fill it in within 14 days to claim your gift, or you'll lose it.
