Why UOB PRVI is a Good Addition To UOB Card Strategy:

The biggest hidden advantage is the POOLING of UNI$ across all UOB cards. “Points pooling” means that all the UNI$ you earn from your various eligible UOB credit cards are merged into one combined balance under your account, instead of each card keeping its own separate stash of points.

Pooling applies to:

  • UOB PRVI Miles
  • UOB Preferred Platinum Visa
  • UOB Lady’s Card
  • UOB Visa Signature
  • UOB Payment Facility top-ups

Benefits of pooling:

  • Easier to hit the 5,000 UNI$ blocks needed for miles conversion
  • Only one S$25 transfer fee
  • You can cancel PRVI without losing miles, as long as you keep any UNI$-earning card

All UNI$ eventually funnel into your PRVI main pool, making it your “miles vault.”

Limitations to Know:

While strong for travel, the PRVI Miles card is not ideal for daily small purchases.

1. UOB Rounding Policy = Lost Miles

  • UOB rounds all spending down to the nearest S$5 block before calculating UNI$.

Example: S$9.99 → treated as S$5 → earns only 6 miles (0.6 mpd)

  • This makes the effective earn rate lower for small/non-round transactions.

2. Points Expiry

  • This card isn’t the best option for general day-to-day spending because the UNI$ you earn expire two years after the end of the quarter they’re credited, meaning casual spending can leave you with points that lapse before you use them. On top of that, the card awards UNI$ in $5 spending blocks, so smaller everyday purchases—or transactions that don’t neatly fit into these blocks—often earn fewer miles than expected, making it harder to maximise value on routine spending.

How Do I Use UOB PRVI?

I use the UOB PRVI Miles Visa only for CardUp and iPayMy to turn big bills—like insurance, rent, and income tax—into miles, since it’s the highest-earn-rate card with a waivable annual fee and the Visa version often has more promos than the Mastercard one. If you’re new to it, CardUp and iPayMy is a platform that lets you pay expenses that normally don’t accept credit cards by charging your card (so you earn miles) and then sending the payment out via bank transfer on your behalf. It’s a simple way to “buy” miles cheaply for business-class flights. For first-time users you can use my promo code to save on fees.

Sign Up for CardUp and iPayMy:

  • New Users:
    • CardUp: Use code NICHOLASN116 to get $30 off your first payment (sweet spot payment amount: $1,154). Alternatively, if you have large payments, use code “LOBANGSIS” to get discounted 1.79% fee on up to S$5K on your first payment with a Visa card.
    • iPayMy: Sign up via this link to get $30 off (sweet spot payment amount: $1,250).

Conclusion:

UOB PRVI is a great card, but the version that suits you best depends on your spending habits and travel patterns. The Visa and Mastercard versions are the most practical for everyday use, thanks to their wide acceptance and strong overseas earn rates, making them ideal for frequent travellers who want simplicity and a card that “just works” everywhere. On the other hand, the AMEX version is tailored for higher spenders and frequent flyers who can fully utilise its premium perks—like complimentary airport limo transfers and the annual 20,000-mile milestone bonus with S$50,000 spend. If you value maximum perks and don’t mind optimising your spending, AMEX offers the greatest upside; but if you prefer broader acceptance, Visa or Mastercard will serve you better.
