Overview:
Choosing the right credit card for your wedding banquet can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. The right card can help you earn meaningful rewards, whether that’s cashback for your honeymoon or miles for future travels.
Many people on my TikTok channel have asked which credit card works best for wedding banquets. I covered this in 2023, but since rewards programs often change, this updated guide will walk you through how to decide between miles and cashback, understand Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), and use the best credit card strategies for your wedding day.
Miles vs. Cashback — Which Should You Choose?
This is one of the most common questions I get.
Miles cards can be highly rewarding, especially if you love to travel. They let you earn miles that can later be redeemed for flights—but they do require more effort. You’ll need to track:
- Which spending categories qualify for bonus miles
- Monthly spending caps
- When your miles expire
For example, some cards like the UOB Preferred Platinum Visa (PPV) give you 4 miles per dollar only for specific payment types (e.g., mobile contactless). Meanwhile, miles from many banks expire after a certain time, so you’ll need to plan transfers to programs like KrisFlyer before they lapse.
Some banks (like UOB) let you combine points across cards (e.g., UOB Lady’s + UOB PPV + UOB Visa Signature) with a single transfer fee, while others charge per card. It can be powerful—but also a bit complicated.
If you prefer a simpler approach, cashback cards are easier to manage. You’ll earn straight-up cash rebates without worrying about transfer partners or expiry dates.
Bottom Line:
Miles cards offer better long-term travel rewards if you’re willing to manage them. Cashback cards are easier and more flexible—great if you just want immediate savings.
Use Your Wedding Spend To Maximise Credit Card Sign Up Rewards
Don’t have any of the cards yet? You can sign up using the links below to grab the current welcome offers. For example, if a card has a minimum qualifying spend of S$500, you can easily meet it by charging your wedding—or any big expense—to it. Most merchants are fine with splitting payments across multiple cards.
At max hack level, for a S$2,000 total spend, you could split it across four different banks’ new-to-bank cards to trigger four separate sign-up bonuses. I share timely credit card sign up deals on my Telegram channel, which you can check out!
Why the Merchant Category Code (MCC) Matters
Your wedding banquet could easily cost S$10,000–S$20,000, so it’s worth making sure every dollar earns the maximum rewards. The key is understanding your venue’s Merchant Category Code (MCC)—a four-digit code that determines how your transaction is classified by banks.
For example:
- Wheeler’s Estate → MCC 5812 (Restaurants & Eating Places)
- Pan Pacific Hotel → MCC 7011 (Hotels, Motels & Resorts)
This code affects how your spending is recognized by your credit card—and therefore how much cashback or how many miles you’ll earn.
If your restaurant is inside a hotel, take note: the MCC might be 7011 (Hotels, Motels & Resorts) instead of 5812 (Restaurants & Eating Places). That small detail can completely change which cards qualify for bonus rewards.
👉 In short, always confirm your venue’s MCC before making any payment—it’s the difference between earning 0.4 miles per dollar and 4 miles per dollar.
How to Find Your Venue’s MCC
The most reliable way is through the DBS Chatbot:
- Block a DBS or POSB credit card on the DBS/POSB app.
- Initiate a payment for your venue (don’t worry, it won’t go through).
- Check the DBS Chatbot for the failed transaction details. The MCC code name will be displayed.
- Lastly, you can search the Merchant Category Name on this Citibank MCC list – V means Visa Cards, M means Mastercard Cards.
If using the DBS chatbot isn’t ideal, some venues offer food tastings before booking. You could use this chance to test the MCC by making a small payment with a credit card. Alternatively, just ask the banquet manager for their MCC.
Miles Strategy for Wedding Banquets
If your venue allows monthly installment payments, you can maximize rewards by spreading payments across several miles cards.
Here’s how:
- Split payments across different cards, hitting each one’s monthly spending cap.
- Check each card’s cap (some are based on calendar month, others on statement month).
This strategy lets you earn 4 miles per dollar on a large expense without exceeding any cap.
